The Games screen
The database currently contains over 4 million high-quality
games, updated weekly, which can be replayed online and searched by a
variety of criteria. When the list is unfiltered, the games that appear are the most
important ones that occured recently.
To search by White and/or black player, start typing the first
letters of the player surname (or two letters followed by a comma). The system
will bring up a list of the matching players and the one needed can be selected. The system
matches games based on exact surname, or exact surname, comma, and exact forename.
Please note that in some cases, there might be the same player represented in one or more ways.
For example, Ivanchuk,Vassily and Ivanchuk,V refer to the same player, though each one
will bring up different games. In this case, searching by just the surname will get the games
of both variations.
You can also search by site and tournament (the system pattern matches based on at least 3
letters typed in these search fields). There is also available a Year and ECO code search.
Finally, there is a search field for the result desired.
These search criteria can obviously be combined together to drill down to a specific game.
The games in the games list can be viewed by clicking on the desired row. The list
shows the players and their ratings, ECO code, the year in which the game was
played, the result and the total number of moves. Hovering over the players in the list
with the mouse will reveal the tournament and site of the game in question.
Whenever the games are updated, the default games that appear in the list may vary to
reflect the most important recent games.
The Problems screen
Here you can view through a variety of problems. To view the
solution of a particular problem, just click on the "Show Solution" link on the
Search panel. You can play through the moves and variations of the problems - variations are colour coded
for better readability and playability. You can search for problems by a particular composer, keywords, and
even by difficulty. Keywords can be separated by a semicolon (eg: "zugzwang;stalemate").
Registered ChessBites users can rate any problem once from
1-5. However, as an unregistered user, you can still search and solve problems.
You can navigate through the problems database by entering the search criteria
and clicking "Search next" or "Next Random" or by typing a problem number
directly at the top left hand side and clicking the "Go" button. In the latter
case, the search criteria entered will be ignored.
